How do chemical peels work?

Chemical peels are facial treatments that remove dead skin cells from the skin’s surface to reveal the new skin beneath. To exfoliate the top layer of skin, a medical professional will apply a chemical solution.
Medium and deep chemical peels also remove skin cells from the layers below. A chemical peel is a non-surgical procedure that can achieve remarkable results with minimal to no pain and slight recovery.
What happens during the Chemical Peel?
Chemical peels usually take between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on how deep the treatment is. Preparing your skin for the appointment is the first step. First, we will clean your skin and then cover and protect your eyes and hair. Next, Aleksandra Predota, APRN FNP-C will apply a highly effective chemical solution to your face using a brush or sponge. The solution (typically glycolic, malic, or salicylic acid), exfoliates and rejuvenates new skin. The solution may cause a slight stinging sensation on your skin.
Aleksandra will then neutralize the solution and gently remove it from your skin. She will apply a cooling compress and a rejuvenating hyaluronic/peptide mask to further soothe your skin.
Depending on the depth of the peel, we may recommend pain medication to use at home.
What can you expect after your chemical peel treatment
The healing time that follows your chemical peel will vary based on the depth of the treatment chosen to meet your goals. This is why it is essential that patients schedule a complimentary, confidential consultation in advance of scheduling a treatment that may impact your activities for a short period of time.
For example, some mild peels will cause redness and swelling that will last up to one week. Depending on the peel chose, patients typically experience skin flaking for up to two weeks following treatment.
For the deeper peels, patients may need a topical cream and pain medication to ease the discomfort that may last one to two weeks.
All chemical peels require that patients refrain from wearing make up during the healing process and it is essential that patients avoid sun exposure.
